North Carolina Election Day Recap

November 4, 2026

Written by Story Oliver, Dylan Ray Reel, Dylan Nash Frick and Trafton P. Dinwiddie

Tuesday, November 3rd was Election Day, and the results have brought significant changes to North Carolina's political landscape. Voters across the state turned out in record numbers, reflecting many of the trends seen all over the country. All 170 North Carolina General Assembly seats, a US Senate seat, all 14 US House seats, and a North Carolina Supreme Court seat were on the ballot.

First looking at statewide races, former Governor Roy Cooper won his US Senate race by nearly 20 percentage points and Justice Anita Earls won her reelection by almost 18 percentage points. The North Carolina Congressional seats had a big shakeup with now 10 Democrats out of 14 total with incumbents, former Speaker of the NC House Tim Moore, Virginia Foxx, Addison McDowell, Richard Hudson, and Brad Knott losing their seats. Democrat Jamie Ager won against Jennifer Balkcom for incumbent Chuck Edwards seat by more than 15 percentage points.

In the North Carolina General Assembly, Republicans appear to have lost 27 seats, meaning 26 flipped from Republican to Democrat and one Republican to Unaffiliated. In the Senate, three incumbents lost their seats, and five new members will soon join the chamber. Republicans also lost their veto-proof supermajority in the Senate, appearing to have 26 seats, four short of the 30 needed to maintain it.

On the House side, there was a larger turnover compared to the Senate with 18 incumbents losing their seats and 33 new members. Democrats took control of the House, with 71 of 120 seats, meaning they hold a House majority for the first time since the 2010 election.
